despite it being a 45 minute drive for me then, it has a really DENSE population of channels. I'm not suprised that lake wilhelm has a good catfish population but I've heard it has a dense bullhead population and I would think they would be something of a pest when chasing big channels.Īgain when I was in the area the lake that I went to to catch catfish was shenango lake. Certainly the fish commision does not want the mighty shovelback in any More waters then they are and It doesn't stock them, anywhere. it is on the UPSTREAM side of the trussel.įlatheads Never did strike me as lake fish, and IT seems that most reports of flatheads caught in western pennsylvania were undoubtably just oddball fish covertly 'stocked' in them by anglers.

get into the clarion and fish the rocks just below (and above) the last deep hole on the clarion. Of course if you've got a boat, thats not a big deal.

One place that I thought was REally good was the confluence of the clarion and alleghany river near foxburg. There was some nice rocks and good structure opposite of town. No actually when I lived in the area I favored emlenton.

Jason, have you ever fished at East Brady? Definately some big kats up there, some deep holes with structure too. There in there though! Hope this helps you in your quest. I plan on fishing Kennedy Mills a little harder this year, there is some deep water up that way which I have'nt really fished all that much. I have also caught small flatheads around McConnels mill and Kennedy mill too. Another thing that I found is, since there are absolutley tons of 20-30" fish, using a large bait helps keep the little ones off of it, at least for a while. It seems that when they are there, they must eat everything around cause you can't catch a smallmouth to save your life. Throw a rapala around for a while, if nothing hits it within 100 or so casts, start fishing for flatheads:big_smile. The way I find the flats on that small water is "1. They are a few good ones mixed in with tons of 20-30" fish, My biggest flat out of the slippery rock is 41" i did'nt have a sclae with me at the time so I don't know what it weighed, pretty heavy though. I fish all over up that way, I catch channels and flats, just look for the big holes and deep water, believe it or not there in there. Let me know if you decide to seriously pursue this. It would be interesting to know, where on the alleghany flatheads are unpractical to fish for emlenton oilcity/franklin/ maybe even tionesta. seriously planning a trip during the 4th of july weekend. Unfortunately tom I would be a total neophyte there I've never fished it. I even know where Gravel lick road, just below cooks forest. look up the 2005 / 2006/ 2007 state lists and you will see it mentioned several times.

What makes clarion worth a 40 mile drive from Warren PA (besides a well known dearth of trophy catfish up here) is its consistent catch of large channel catfish 10-20#. If you really want catfish talk to some of the serious allegheny anglers= they just might be able to help! There are no known reports of flatheads in the clarion. Sadly tho' if flatheads are you sole desire you're a few miles OFF.
